What Is a Lithophane? The Photo Lamp Gift Everyone Remembers

By Micah Craft · 18 Oct 2026

A lithophane is a picture made from light and shadow. When it’s switched off, it looks like a white surface with a soft, bumpy texture. Switch on the light behind it, and a detailed black-and-white photo appears — almost like magic.

How does a lithophane work?

The idea is centuries old: craftsmen once carved thin porcelain so light would shine through thin areas and be blocked by thick ones. Today we do the same thing with a 3D printer. Your photo is converted into a 3D surface where dark parts of the image become thicker plastic and light parts become thinner. When light passes through, the thickness differences recreate your photo.

Why lithophanes make great gifts

Popular occasions in India include birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Raksha Bandhan, Diwali and housewarmings.

How to choose the best photo

  1. Pick a clear, well-lit photo. Daylight photos work best. Very dark or blurry photos lose detail.
  2. Close-ups beat wide shots. Faces should fill a good part of the frame.
  3. Simple backgrounds help. A busy background competes with the faces.
  4. Use the original file. Send the original photo, not a screenshot or a compressed forward.

Don’t worry if you’re unsure — when you order, we check your photo and suggest the best crop before printing.

Lamp or frame?

Our Custom Lithophane Night Lamp has its own LED light, so it glows anywhere. The Photo Lithophane Frame is a stand-up frame that reveals the photo when placed near a window or lamp.

How to order

Add the lamp or frame to your cart and place your order (COD available). After ordering, send your photo on WhatsApp with your order number. We print it, check it under light, and ship it across India.
